AUTHORITY PRESCRIPTION
- Some PBS medications are restricted and require prior approval from Medicare before a doctor is able to prescribe them on the PBS. This prior approval to prescribe grants the doctor the Authority to prescribe the desired medicine and have it funded under the PBS.
Authority to prescribe an Authority medicine is granted for specific indications and/or for certain patient circumstances. Authority may be obtained by telephone to Medicare Australia (known as "phone approval") or in writing from an authorised delegate of the Minister for Health.
Prescriptions must be written on an Authority Prescription Form, and the approval number must be noted on the prescription. Pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has been approved by Medicare Australia (indicated by the presence of the approval number).
Some drugs may have Authority Required (Streamlined) status which does not require an explicit approval from Medicare, instead the doctor can use the Authority code found in the published Schedule for a given drug/indication.
But still pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has the necessary Authority code.

(Pharmacia Australia)
CONSUMER MEDICINE INFORMATION
This leaflet has been written to provide you with some background information on why your doctor has prescribed Depo-Provera for you. Your doctor and pharmacist have full detailed information on Depo-Provera. They are trained to help you to understand why you are using this medicine.
Read this information carefully before you start using Depo-Provera. Keep this leaflet in a handy place as you may ,wish to refer to it again. Please contact either your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about your treatment with Depo-Provera or if you have any problems or difficulties before, during or after using Depo-Provera.
It is important to remember that Depo-Provera is a PRESCRIPTION ONLY MEDICINE. Do not administer this medicine to yourself.
The name of your medicine
Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) Aqueous Suspension Injection 50mg/mL and 150mg/mL are registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (AUST R 12301 and 12300). This pack contains one vial.
What is your medicine
Depo-Provera contains medroxyprogesterone acetate as the active ingredient. This is a chemical similar to (but not the same as) the natural hormone progesterone. This hormone is produced by your ovaries during the second half of your monthly cycle.
The active ingredient is suspended in the following inactive ingredients:
macrogol 3350, polysorbate 80, sodium chloride, methyl hydroxybenzoate and propyl hydroxybenzoate.
What your medicine is for
There are several different reasons why your doctor may have prescribed Depo-Provera for you. The recommended dose for you will depend on why you are using Depo-Provera. For more information on the dose, see the section in this brochure called low and when to use Depo-Provera.
Your doctor may have prescribed Depo-Provera for one of the following reasons:
Contraception
Depo-Provera is an injectable form of contraception that protects you from pregnancy for 3 months. There is some chance that you may accidentally fall pregnant with any form of contraception. This chance is very low if Depo-Provera is used exactly as explained in the section How and when to use Depo-Provera. If you would like more information on this, please ask your doctor.
Endometriosis
Your doctor may have prescribed Depo-Provera for the treatment of endometriosis. This is a condition in which cells from the lining of the uterus (womb) grow in places outside the uterus, usually in the pelvis.
During the menstrual cycle, these cells may grow and break down in the same way as those in the lining of the uterus (womb). This may cause pain and discomfort.
Cancer
Depo-Provera is also used for the treatment of certain types of cancer including cancer of the breast, kidney and endometrium (the lining of the uterus).
How your medicine works
The active ingredient in Depo-Provera, medroxyprogesterone acetate, has several actions in the body.
The main action of medroxyprogesterone acetate is to prevent the release of eggs from your ovaries during your menstrual cycle. If an egg is not released from your ovaries, it cannot become fertilised and result in pregnancy. In endometriosis, medroxyprogesterone acetate will help to stop the growth of the cells found outside the uterus.
Medroxyprogesterone acetate also inhibits the growth of certain types of cancer cells.
Special Instructions and Precautions for using Depo-Provera
Before you start using Depo-Provera you should tell your doctor if:
you may be pregnant
you are taking any other medicines, including medicines you have bought without a prescription
you have or have had cancer of the breast or if there is a family history of cancer of the breast
you have had any problems with your breasts such as an abnormal mammogram (breast X-ray), fibrocystic (tissue forming cysts) breast disease, breast nodule or lumps or ble
