Directions

Our non-drip colour crème formula is so easy to apply! Just follow these simple steps.

1. Do a patch test 48 hours before colouring
2. When you're ready to colour, squeeze content from Tube 1 into bottle 2. Shake until fully blended!
3. If you've never coloured before, or coloured within the last 3 months, apply colour to dry hair from root to tip. Set mixture on for 20 minutes.
4. If you've coloured within the past 3 months, make a ½ inch parting in your dry, unwashed hair with applicator tip. Apply colour mixture to new growth root area only to full saturation. Work from the front to the back of your head. Leave colour mixture on for 15 minutes. Apply remaining colour mixture to the rest of the hair. Work through hair from root top tips. Let develop for an additional 5 minutes. Total application time is 20 minutes
5. When time has elapsed, rinse until water runs clear and condition.
6. Apply a quarter-size amount of Colour Treat Conditioner.
7. Leave on for 2 minutes. Rinse.
8. Use remaining Colour Treat Conditioner once a week after shampooing.

It has no ammonia, and is made up of 80% natural ingredients, including Aloe Vera and coconut oil. The product is easy to use and only takes 20 minutes to develop and has a no-drip formula. There were no harsh smells which is always a big plus. The package also comes with a lovely scented coconut conditioner. There are a range of beautiful colours to choose from, I chose medium brown. It lasts 28 washes, and is very gentle for your hair and scalp. It easily blends away greys. Recommend this hair dye for anyone that is looking for a natural healthy, shiny hair that is gentle in your scalp.

From the moment I opened the packet I knew this was going to be a simple no fuss hair dye - exactly what I like. Even the instructions were short simple and to the point. The cream formula was sooo easy to spread - excellent for my thick frizzy curly hair which is usually hard to do with thinner dyes. From unboxing the product to washing and drying my hair, took me only 1 hour! Has left my hair feeling super soft and the colour pay off is great. Even when applying the dye it did not have that strong hair dye smell to it which would be great for some people sensitive to fumes like asthmatics. There was absolutely no itchiness or irritation at all either! So their "anti allergy" claim seems legitimate to me. The only reason why I have knocked off a star is that the colour is way darker than expected. I ordered Brown Black (3) as that it my natural hair colour and it has ended up Black only (no brown at all) which leaves it a bit flat looking. As it's demi-permanent it should a fade a bit later anyway so I'm not too fussed. But overall seems like a simple but effective at home hair dye. I would consider using it again in the future but would have to purchase a lighter colour!

There was no strong smell, this is the first hair colour that I've used that doesn't have a really overwhelming chemical smell. The colour result was accurate. I have about 30% grey and it covered most of the grey, although not as well as some of the other dyes I've used at home (but this product also doesn't make your eyes water and your scalp feel like its burning). I'm happy with the grey coverage result and would be comfortable using it more often if needed, given it wasn't harsh. I left it on for an extra 5 minutes and had no tingling on my scalp at all which i often find with other products. It's straight forward to apply with everything you need included. I have thick, coarse hair and had to use the whole bottle ;my hair is short so not sure how far 1 bottle would go if you have long hair. I found my hair was really soft after washing and drying. There was no lingering smell in my hair. I'll be using this product again.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I wanted to try a more natural hair dye for a while now and was very happy to see Clairol’s new Natural Instincts with no Ammonia. I went with 4W dark warm brown to just enhance my natural standard brown and it’s turned it into a deep rich lush brown that I’m so happy with. I have been trialing hair dyes for a long time and I’m very impressed with this colour and the after care conditioner is very generous size that I’ll get a least a few more washes from. Overall very happy, I am intrigued to see how it goes over the next month with colour fade.

Rated 4 out of 5 by A K. from Good in between hairdressing appointments colour [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I thought that this was a good colour for the roots, for an in between hairdressing appointments, tie you over. I liked the easy to follow instructions found in the box and that one box provided a generous amount of product, compared to other home packet dyes I have used in the past. It spread easily and distributed well throughout the hair. When using the colour, I didn’t find that it irritated or stung my scalp, which may be due to its NO ammonia or paraben content. I also liked that my hair didn’t feel damaged or drier after colouring, like some products have done that I have used previously. I took a point off for the colour and for the conditioner that came in the box. I got the colour 9 in Light Blonde. But I found the colour turned out a bit brassy in my case, but it wasn’t too bad, considering it wasn’t a permanent colour, I would love it if Clairol would have a cool level 9 shade as well, like it has for the level 8 and 6. I started with a level 7 natural colour on my roots, so maybe if you only moved one colour up or down from your natural hair colour you would get a better result. I was also slightly disappointed with the conditioner as I was expecting an amazing fragrance from the conditioner as Natural Instinct really have such gorgeous scents in their products. I also found that my hair was a little frizzy after using this conditioner, although I usually use a much heavier conditioner, so maybe this was the problem. Overall I think that this is a very satisfactory way to skip salon visits and save money as it provides a very good blend from roots to existing colour. I would definitely recommend this product to someone that wants a coppery or warm blond.

It was very easy to use by myself. I used a shower cap during the 20min wait time, otherwise the pack provided everything else I needed to make it as mess free as possible. I naturally have dark hair and using the dark blonde colour resulted in a tinge of dark brown which I expected. I'd recommend this product for people who intends to colour their greys, rather than those who want to transform their hair colour completely.

Chemical smell was not as strong compared to other at home hair colours have used in the past. Colour pay off was about 2 or 3 shades darker than I wanted but that would be more due to colour build up than the packet die itself! Over all I am really happy with the product and would use again. The price you pay and the delivery you receive is great !

The formula is quite thick meaning it doesn’t drip everywhere and I found the scent to be quite pleasant and not overpowering. Overall my hair looked shiny and refreshed using this product. I do have some greys and they were covered by the initial application although I I can’t say how long it will last before it washes as it’s only been a couple of days since I applied it

I received the Clairol "Natural Instincts" hair colour in No.9 "light blonde",which was not exactly the best match for me (i am a very light,leaning more "ash" blonde,and this was a bit darker than i would use normally...but the best match for me from the range),and loved the concept of a more natural alternative to my usual choice. The product was extremely easy to use (mix the colour and developer together / shake and apply to roots first / wait approx.10 minutes,then apply to lengths for another 20 (or for as long as it takes to get the colour you are after),and then rinse and apply the aftercare conditioner included,to leave you with stunning colour that cares for your hair (no nasty ammonia, PPD....paraphenylenediamine,which is an inclusion used to provides long-lasting hair color that has a natural look,usually any darker shades will have this, and added parabens) and reduces the chance of irritation and allergies.But what is IN this that makes it a joy to use ? coconut oil and Aloe vera (Aloe soothes,coconut to nourish),the fact it is a semi permanent option (if you aren't into the colour,or choose to change your look regularly,that means less time to wait for it to fade out),and the fact that there is not so much of the overpowering smell (that most colours have),to contend with (rather,this had a "chemical" scent,but none of that insanely uncomfortable ammonia fume),plus it was quite "non drip",so less messy for the bathroom sink (and your face).But what of the actual colour ??? Well,as i mentioned,this was not quite the match for me,but i loved the gentler feel this product had on my scalp,i adored the more hair and skin friendly,natural ingredient ingredients and i was thankful for the fact that this product was a fantastic option for hair colour between the "wash in / wash out" temporary colours and the "OK,we're committed now...until you cut or grow it out" permanent variety....but i wished it covered my more significant amount of "reeeeally ash blonde" a little better (i have a fair few now,and whilst being a very fair shade of blonde does afford me more leeway with hiding those pesky things,i still becomes apparent when i wear my hair up...which i do for work daily).These things aside,i would recommend this product to anyone wanting to go a more natural route for their hair coloring needs (it is still very much alive and well even now in my hair...a couple of weeks later,so it has the lasting power),and wants to avoid having to leave home to go to a salon to get a "colour fix" (a MUST these days for most of us,a legal requirement for some..not to mention the cost of a salon fix).

It contains 80% natural ingredients which also includes coconut oil and aloe vera. It also doesn't contain any ammonia or parabens which is suitable for those who are after a more natural product for their hair. The hair dye is easy to use and is suitable for those who have a bit of grey hair and want to cover it up. I applied it over my hair. Once I washed my hair and came out of the shower I could see that the colour matched my hair pretty well and helped to cover up the small bits of grey hair that I had. It is a semi permanent colour so it's not the strongest for grey coverage but for my hair it worked well. My hair didn't feel dry or damaged and it still had that nice shine. With all the chemicals that are found in hair dyes I like having a natural option which can be less harsh on the hair and scalp.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So, I was lucky enough to be one of the girls picked to trial this product for BeautyCrew and I'm so glad I went for it! I was sent 4RV Dark Burgundy, because wanted a bit of something fun, and I thought that this would be it. This is really straightforward to use, particularly if you've dyed your own hair before. I started by parting my hair into sections so that I could coat them all evenly in order to reach all the bits of needed to. I also did not use the provided gloves, as I find hese to always be a little messy and just generally harder to use, so I can't provide any information on them. I mixed the two coloring products together without any difficulty and spread this over my hair. I really liked that it wasn't too watery, which meant that I made less of a mess than I could have. I let it sit for 20 minutes, as per the packet, and then washed it out until the water ran clear, then I sat for 2 minutes with the provided conditioner in my hair before I went back under the shower. The result? Evenly coloured hair with a hint of red, fresh and ready for the Summer! I also liked that this didn't dry out the hair badly, which has been my experience with some home dyes. I'd be happy to dye my hair again with Clairol Natural Instincts!

This is hectic for 28 wash product. Go lighter than you think you’ll need. A light brown is probably medium. Seems like ok quality stuff though, just beyond pigmented.

Salt and pepper-ish. The smell was pleasant and less chemical than other dyes previously used. Application was easy. Results are mixed with the coarser hair being too stubborn to take well with the light colour. Too soon to tell how it will resist fading over daily washes.

I have quite stubborn greys and this product seemed to work quite well in covering greys. However, I did not use it on mid lengths - ends. Application was easy to use, smelled pleasant and did the job effectively. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to cover their greys, whilst using a product that cares abit more for your hair.

Lather it on and it works well enough. However check the box you are buying. I bought 2 boxes as I have long hair and when I got home no conditioner. I didn't think a big deal but it is. I gave feedback to Clairol who are part of Coty and expected they would just pop a couple of the small conditioner tubes in the post with a sorry but no. they wanted boxes ( who has after using the colour) receipts, all the details of where and date I purchased and have continued with this and nothing else. Not sure I would trust this product again, or if you do, open the box first and check you have the conditioner. No conditioner you have hair like straw! beware

The lack of ammonia means no unpleasant smell while applying and the product applied easily and evenly without too much effort. The gloves provided are good quality, no tears or holes while using. As I have coloured my hair previously I did my roots first followed by the length. The product was easy to wash out afterwards and did not stain my skin at all. However in terms of results I'm disappointed. My hair is fairly dry afterwards despite using the conditioner included. The coverage on the small amount of grey hair I have is OK but not great. The rest of my hair turned out significantly darker than expected. I chose the shade Medium Warm Brown which was closest to my usual colour. While I would expect some colour variation between brands the result is more of a Darkest Brown and it's quite flat without any tonal variation.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Jordana T. from Okay but no Garnier Olia. There are many ways to get a new look these days, be it clothes, makeup or in this case, a box of home hair colour. I’ve been using Garnier Olia hair dye in either very intense red or intense dark red for years now and it really suits my personality and skin tone to be a vibrant red head, just can’t go back now. So it’s been a while since I tried any other brand but I was very excited to trial this Clairol one, which seems similar to garnier as it’s also a more natural alternative to the usual hair dye on the market. Obviously I chose the shade of dark red. As I’ve been dying my hair for years now, it was very easy to use and apply. I popped on a face mask and read a few chapters of my book while waiting for it to develop then hopped in the shower, rinsed until the water ran completely clear, applied the colour care conditioner, rinsed again and I was done. After my hair air dried completely I was left with freshly dyed red locks. The colour was nothing compared to the Garnier one and didn’t last as long, and it didn’t have that floral scent I adore and am used to from Garnier. It was easy to apply, it had a sort of okay coconut scent and the colour was good but not brilliant and it’s affordable. But it just doesn’t rank anywhere close to my beloved Garnier Olia, which is what I’ll be returning to when I next dye my hair. It was really good to try something new though so thank you Beautycrew angels and I can’t wait for my next product to trial and review.

No ammonia or parabens and 80% natural ingredients sounded so positive. However, it dried my hair out and it looked dull and lifeless. I have naturally shiny black hair and adding semi-permanent hair dye makes it even glossier. Clairol natural instincts removed the shine and made it look flat. Application was super quick and easy, it lasted way more than 28 washes and it covered all my greys, but shine is super important, so I won’t use the product again.
