General Information

Calma is an innovative feeding solution designed for breastfed babies. It does not interfere with breastfeeding and lets your baby feed the way they learned at the breast, which makes switching from breast to Calma and back easy.

Calma
The Medela Calma is designed exclusively as an option for breastfeeding mums wishing to feed their babies with expressed breast milk. It was developed in cooperation with breastfeeding experts from the Hartmann Human Lactation Research Group at the University of Western Australia. Calma allows your baby to suck, swallow and breathe in a natural way:

  • your baby can drink, pause and breathe in a natural rhythm, remaining calm and settled
  • your baby needs to create a vacuum to start the milk flow
  • your baby can maintain their natural sucking behaviour

It slows Bub right down to feed and reduces gas in his tummy. He accepted it without issue from birth. Downside is the cleaning is slightly more complicated as the teat is 3 parts! It has little valves in it which means it is the same mechanism to drink from as the breast

Expensive but absolutely worth every cent. Readily available and teat fits all the different sized bottles im pretty sure! We use a range of different sized bottles. Easy to keep clean with the medela bottle brush

I've used the Calma bottle for the top ups, despite it saying it's only for expressed breastmilk. It works fine, and bub drinks only as much as he wants to. I wish I could buy more, they are a lot more expensive than other bottles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for breastfeeding/bottle combo I used this for my newborn twins when I had to top them up with expressed milk by bottle while my milk supply was still being built up. It is great because they have to really work and suck hard to get the flow just like with natural breastfeeding. This way they don't get lazy or confused going between breast and bottle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Settled tummy!!! This bottle is fabulous, my baby is exclusively breast fed and would get terrible pains in her tummy guzzling expressed milk from a bottle. We have been using the Calma bottle for 2 weeks now and she is very settled after feeding. Happy bub, happy Mum :)

The bottle and parts are easy to use and sterilise. Our baby likes them and we don’t use other brands, have stuck with the Calma range as it works and the Medela range is good quality.

Unfortunately these just didn’t help at all. The constant attempts to help him latch just resulted in more and more failures. May work for some others but seemed to make our issues worse.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bit too slow flow [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Was recommended this product to hell mimic breastfeeding as we were trying to mix feed and bub was guzzling the formula too quickly, however it’s just that tad *too slow* a flow. It would take forever for bub to finish the bottle and he kept pulling off and getting frustrated while feeding - not sure if he was confused and expecting all bottles to be a faster flow like he has experienced previously. We only used a handful of times and eventually just went back to the standard slow flow teat which seemed to be fine. Maybe it would be better for babies under 6 weeks?

It might actually be because she was used to some of the other bottles so effervescent though I was hoping this one would work as it mimics the breast, it was not for me and bub.

We were mixed feeding and I really wanted to encourage breastfeeding as much as possible so the science behind really appealed. However, our bub didn't take it and ultimately we were able to successfully mix feed with regular teats without any confusion. Great to try if you buy a pack that includes this but perhaps to not buy standalone as it doesn't work for everyone.

This bottle worked twice for us but we ended up having to switch to the regular teats as it was way to hard for him to get milk from and he was not able to drink from this bottle. But it’s a great idea, just didn’t work for us.

Didn't find it necessary, baby didn't seem to find it all that easy to feed from it and preferred the normal teats with slow flow. Did apprecuat eit vame with a bottle and extra caps.

No matter what I did I could not get my baby to drink from the bottle while using the calma. It is quite a hard plastic and takes alot of force to drink through.

I read the whole article about how it works and was impressed with the technology they used to design this. But my daughter didn't like it at all. I used it for a try only couple of times then sold it with pump later.

Unfortunately, our bubs didn’t like this teat and wouldn’t take to it. We were unable to use this and had to revert to a normal slow flow teat instead.

My son couldn’t get much milk, he was working so hard and getting barely any milk, he then gave up even though he was hungry. I never used it again and I do not recommend, worst bottle teat ever!

He was exclusively breast fed and he did not like this teat. It is very rigid and not soft. He would just choke and gag with it. The teat is also super annoying to pull apart and clean.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth it I used these thinking they will help with being able to keep going with breastfeeding at the same time and the baby not developing precedence for bottles. Didn’t work, and baby stopped taking the breast very soon after occasionally using these. Also, it has huge amounts of milk coming out of it! Better off using a slow flow teat with a proper shape of the breast.
