MULTIPLE PACKS
Dispensing multiple packs or multiple repeats of prescription medication
- As pharmacists we must always comply explicitly with your doctors prescribed directions this includes the quantity of the prescription goods to be supplied. Therefore the only time we can supply an increased quantity of a prescribed medicine is if the doctor prescribes that quantity for you.
AUTHORITY PRESCRIPTION
- Some PBS medications are restricted and require prior approval from Medicare before a doctor is able to prescribe them on the PBS. This prior approval to prescribe grants the doctor the Authority to prescribe the desired medicine and have it funded under the PBS.
Authority to prescribe an Authority medicine is granted for specific indications and/or for certain patient circumstances. Authority may be obtained by telephone to Medicare Australia (known as "phone approval") or in writing from an authorised delegate of the Minister for Health.
Prescriptions must be written on an Authority Prescription Form, and the approval number must be noted on the prescription. Pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has been approved by Medicare Australia (indicated by the presence of the approval number).
Some drugs may have Authority Required (Streamlined) status which does not require an explicit approval from Medicare, instead the doctor can use the Authority code found in the published Schedule for a given drug/indication.
But still pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has the necessary Authority code.

CONSUMER MEDICINE INFORMATION
This leaflet is designed to help you take Marvelon 28, a modern low-dose Pill.
Please read it carefully. If you still have any doubts about how to take Marvelon 28, please ask your doctor.
Introduction
There are several means of preventing a pregnancy. One of these is by taking contraceptive Pill.
N.B. The information in this leaflet only concerns Marvelon 28. For information on any other contraceptive Pill read the leaflet about
Pill.
How Marvelon 28 works
Marvelon 28 is used for 28-day cycles. During this time a small amount of female sex hormones is taken with the large (active)
tablets. These hormones are intended to prevent the monthly release of an egg from the ovaries. If an egg is not released
pregnancy will not occur.
The small (inactive) tablets are added to the pack in order to simplify and ensure regular tablet-taking. Using Marvelon 28 you take
one tablet per day even during your menstrual period. While you are taking the small Marvelon 28 table 'regular monthly period'
occurs. However, this period may be lighter and shorter than usual.
How effective is Marvelon 28
Marvelon 28 is one of the most reliable methods of contraception if taken correctly.
To make Marvelon 28 as effective as it can be, remember:
To take it at about the same time every day (See the section What to do if you forget to take a tablet).
To use another contraceptive method as well if you miss a large tablet have an upset stomach, or are taking medicines for
instance antibiotics which may interfere with the way the Pill works. (See the section What to do if you have an upset stomach,
and the section What to do if have to take other medicines).
How to take Marvelon 28
The Marvelon 28 pack contains 28 white tablets: 21 large tablets with active substances and 7 small tablets without active
substances. Alongside each tablet is the corresponding day of the week. Tablets should be taken at the same time day starting
with the tablet marked with the corresponding day of the week from green starting-zone. Following the direction of the arrows
continue taking one tablet each day until the pack is empty - that is for 28 days in all. Each tablet should be swallowed whole with
the help of some water, if necessary.
Starting your first Marvelon 28 Pack
If you are not taking the Pill at present
If your period has not yet begun read section 1.
If your period has begun in the last 5 days read section 2.
If it is more than 5 days since your period began read section 3.
1. If your period has not yet begun
Wait for your next period to begin. Until then take other contraceptive precautions. Read the box Other contraceptive
precautions carefully. On the day of this period take your first Marvelon 28 tablet marked with the corresponding day of the week
from the green starting-zone of the pack.
Example
As you can see, the green starting-zone contains two small tablets (THU-FRI) and 5 large tablets (SAT-WED). If your menstrual
period begins for example on a Friday, you will start tablet-taking with a small tablet from the place marked FRI. On the other hand
if your menstrual period begins for example on a Sunday then you start with a large tablet from the place marked SUN. Following
the direction of the arrows continue taking one tablet each day until the pack is empty - that is for 28 days in all. With Marvelon
28, in each cycle the last active (large) tablet will be taken on a Friday. Consequently you will virtually always have a
menstruation-free weekend.
N.B. If your monthly bleeding starts on a Thursday or a Friday you will start with the small (inactive) tablets. Therefore, you must
take extra contraceptive precautions. Read the box Other contraceptive precautions carefully. With regard to the other starting
