CONSUMER MEDICINE INFORMATION
This leaflet provides a summary of some of the important things you need to know about this medicine. Only your doctor and
pharmacist are able to weigh up all the relevant facts and you should consult them about all aspects of this medicine as it relates
to you.
Identification
Advantan is the brand name for 3 types of skin preparations all containing 0.1% methylprednisolone aceponate together with other
ingredients as outlined in the table below:
Advantan Cream 49380
Decyl oleate, glyceryl monostearate, cetostearyl alcohol, hard fat, polyoxyl 40 stearate, glycerol 85%,disodium edetate, benzyl
alcohol, butylated hydroxytoluene, Softisan 378 and water

What is it used for and how does it work
Advantan is a corticosteroid ("steroid") skin preparation for the treatment of eczema (dermatitis) and psoriasis in adults and
children.
After being rubbed into the skin, Advantan like other steroids, attaches to skin cells and alters the way they behave by largely
unknown mechanisms.
Advantan remains in the skin and is only very minimally absorbed into the bloodstream. Absorption is increased if occlusive
dressings are used.
Checklist before using Advantan
You should not use Advantan if you are allergic to it or to any of its ingredients, if you have tuberculous or syphilitic processes in
the area to be treated, or in the presence of viral skin diseases such as chickenpox or shingles. Care should be taken not to get
Advantan into your eyes. You should discuss the suitability of using Advantan with your doctor if you are pregnant or breast
feeding.
Advantan should not be used if you have acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis.
Additional, specific therapy is required in bacterially infected skin diseases and/or in fungus infections.
If the skin dries out excessively under long term use of Advantan cream, a switch should be made to one of the fattier formulations
(Advantan ointment or Advantan fatty ointment).
If signs of skin allergy develop, Advantan should be discontinued and appropriate treatment instituted.
The duration of use should be kept as brief as possible on treatment of larger areas, particularly in children.
How to use Advantan properly
Advantan should be applied thinly to the affected area of skin, generally once a day. The duration of treatment should usually not
exceed 12 weeks in adults and 4 weeks in children.
Further Information
Advantan is only available on a doctor's prescription. Advantan is for external use only. It should not be swallowed.
Unwanted Effects
Skin conditions such as itching, burning and redness may occur in approximately 5% of patients using Advantan. Less common
potential effects, especially with long term use of steroid creams include skin thinning, the appearance of fine blood vessels on the
skin surface, "stretch marks" and acne.
During human investigation, none of these side effects occurred under Advantan on treatment up to 12 weeks (adults) and 4 weeks
(children).
As with other steroids for skin use, the following side effects may occur in rare cases: hair infection, excessive hair, skin disease
around the mouth, allergic skin reactions to one of the ingredients of the formulations.
In case of overdose
Skin thinning, fine blood vessels on the skin surface and "stretch marks" may occur if too much Advantan is used. Advantan
should be discontinued in such cases.
Storage Conditions
Advantan cream and ointment should be stored below 25 degrees C and the fatty ointment below 30 degrees C. Advantan should
not be used after the expiry date printed on the e
